The monotone, haunting tones of HAL, the robot that fights to protect itself in Kubrick's 2001, will stay with you long after the ending credits die.
Criticised for being too long, and having a near impenetrable plot, this film is still one of my favourites. Kubrick shows the world once again how to make every lingering shot count, how to create dramatic tension, how to make the viewer question whether he or she is being entertained BUT never allowing one to become bored. This film chronicles the evolution of man, and his stuggle to subdue a being that considers itself superior. That's how I read it anyway, there are probably a hundred other ways.
